CBT Gold Standard Of Psychotherapy
Firstly, if you’ve identified CBT as your preferred modality then you’ve made a good start. As a therapy approach CBT has over the years travelled some distance evolving into an umbrella term for empirically supported treatments for clearly defined psychological problems with specific treatment protocols It has expanded to include what is known as the third wave approaches e.g. mindfulness-based treatments for recurrent depression and compassion focused therapy. As a result of its rigorous research base, CBT is now viewed in the research literature as the current gold standard of psychotherapy.
Does CBT Have All The Answers?
This is reassuring but it doesn’t mean to say that CBT has all the answers. Distrust any approach or any therapist that says it does. There is still much to be understood about mechanisms for change and why some patients fail to respond and others are prone to relapse. There is also wide variations in the way that CBT is delivered and an often voiced criticism is that the approach can be too mechanistic and over-reliant on rating scales which can be reductive and potentially damaging. These issues need to be addressed and as the CBT community is committed to a progressive research programme we can expect ongoing improvements.
